Inaugural Cortez Electric Boat Marathon
April 16, 2010

Overview:

A 25.2 mile electric boat race starting at marker #49A near the Cortez/Longboat Key Hwy 684 bridge and finishing at Small Craft Festival docks.  The only means of propulsion allowed during the race must be derived from an electric motor supplied by either batteries or fuel cells. Boats cannot add or charge batteries or fuel cells at any point on the course during the race. There is a mandatory 15 minute stop at the 8.1 mile mark at Bay Front Park.  There are multiple boat ramps available along the course in case any boat needs to exit the race early. Any boat not completing the course within 6.5 hours will be disqualified from the competition.  A chase boat will be on hand to lend assistance if needed.

The course is set up so that a 4' draft boat could participate but any boat
that draws 30" or more should pay good attention to the channel markers and have
an accurate depth sounder onboard as Sarasota Bay has many shallow areas.

Classes and Awards:

Single Hull:  Any single hull boat with a length to beam ratio less than 6 to 1. Two awards will be given for this class:  Best overall and best handicapped by waterline length (1.34 times the square root of the waterline).

Solar panels are allowed to be charging batteries during race.
Boats are expected to have a paddle, oars or alternative means of propulsion available but if anything other than an electric motor is used for forward propulsion the boat will be immediately disqualified from the competition.  A paddle or oar may be utilized to assist with docking at the stopping point at Bayfront Park or to push off in the case of grounding.
Sail boats are allowed but you cannot unfurl your sails during the race. There is only one bridge that needs to be considered and it is at a turnaround point on the course so if a boat can't get under the bridge we will ask that it perform a 540 degree turn before the bridge instead going under the bridge and doing a 180.
